AVP came to San Francisco again this year. Yes, that’s Misty and Kerri and Todd and Phil, our Gold medalists, hanging out with the general public. I admire Misty May for taunting George Bush at the games in Beijing. She did more for the American image abroad in two weeks than most athletes do in a lifetime.
We tried out our own spot in the city, under the 280 off-ramp at the tip of Mission Bay. Playing volleyball at 5pm with motorists stuck in traffic 70 feet above you is a perception-altering experience.
Phil and I worked opposite each other for three weeks and we managed to rope him into some weekday activities too: this excursion to Chinatown for House of Nanking and to look for that special melanine-infused candy from the corner market. House of Nanking is a friendly place where it’s best to ask the chef for a recommendation. One of our dinner companions was an Iranian-American limo driver; we helped him study for his first US driving test (after 30 years of limo driving in the US).

Then there was the mid-week trip to Kirby Cove. Thanks to everyone who made it out on Family night (which was beautiful); Singles night was foggy and a little more sparse, but without kids the marshmallows went a lot further.
