During my first visit to this public property artist cooperative I couldn’t get over the feeling that I was trespassing: these kids took over an abandoned shopping mall and turned it into artists’ studios, a cinema and several lively bars. These days I think some of those original rebels would feel a little out of place. The place has clean bathrooms and the graffiti is approved by committee. Still, there are new projects like this popping up all over Berlin’s public spaces. See next: a community-run petting zoo in the middle of Kreuzberg.
